I’m writing a thesis on deliberate self harm right now, and guys, it’s something that people who haven’t done it have great difficulty understanding. It’s important not to just jump to the conclusion that a person is doing it to make others feel bad or get some attention, because these are rarely the primary reason for the behaviour.
However, I’m perplexed as to what this girl is attempting to accomplish by posting photographs on the net. People who self harm usually attempt to conceal the damage done, but she seems to be almost…proud?
For anyone who’s interested in some research about why people self harm, there is an excellent paper published dealing with it.

I find this very disturbing. This girl has the idea cutting is cool and she will get attention with her making photos and posting them on internet.
I am a cutter myself, and I am NOT, i repeat NOT an emo. I am just a casual girl, with a bit of her own style. I do everything to hide my cuts, nobody, but my best friend, knows it. But this, this is not cutting for letting out emotions and feelings (wich is why I cut) this is just being ‘one of the emo’s, cuz emo’s are cool’
I don’t even spend time on these kind of people, i dont try to help them. Girl, cut even deeper, the faggot emokids will think ur soo cool, thats what you want, right?

Emo is how people feel… some ppl actually have very bad home lives and are abused and cutting helps them… i understand how they feel and i do my best to help them… but those kids that have evrything handed to them like they have parents that give them what they want that get their new cars gave to them they get the best things in the world and just cuz they dont get the cellphone or the computer they wanted or they dont get to be with the guy they wanted they think the world is coming to an end… those ppl need to re-think and realize that theres kids out there who would kill to have a better life… im emo/goth… i was abused by my father and raped when i was 11 my dad said i deserved it and my mom stood back and watched… he split my head open on the hard wood floor… i got a new home i get hand me down clothes and hardly nothing… but im thankful i have a family that cares for me now… be thankful for what you stuck up snobs got!

I do live in suburbia. I do have real issues. I am not selfish. I have spent lots of time helping people who worry about their next meal. Lived with them in fact and it broke my heart to leave them. My mother has verbally edging on physically abused me since the earliest I can remember keeping my father in the dark. My little sister in an amazing musician and their pride and joy and they are so happy she is going to continue this perfect little middle class life. I become the “problem child” the one who plans to join the peace corps or another organization and spend her life traveling and helping people. That makes me, wrong, and bad. My grandparents have very severe paranoia and delusions that tend to wreak havoc on my mother and in turn me. I am not proud of my cutting. I wish I was stronger. I wish I could stop. I will not tell anyone. It would hurt my friends, my family, and I don’t know how that would effect my ability to join an organization such as the peace corps. I know I just have to hang in until college when I can leave it all behind and live out my dreams. I am not always sad in fact most of my friends cannot think of a time when i wasn’t smiling, only once have I ever cried in front of a friend. Please, don’t judge people who cut so harshly. I am sure there are some who are what you say they are, and I don’t know why this girl posted this picture it caused a lot of hurtful things to be said. Just trying to help people understand that not all “emos” “cutters” whatevers are selfish, attention, seeking brats. They are just stuck, and don’t want to hurt people they love.
